Food Thoughts
Chicken

Mom shared her chicken, and Jaryth liked it. At first it looked like he was just going to feed it to the dogs (ie. pick up, drop on floor, watch dogs fight over scraps). But then he put it in his mouth. Once he figured out it tasted good, most of it went in his mouth.

String cheese

When mom eats string cheese, Jaryth wants to help. So I broke off a small piece for him and gave it to him. He sucked on it for a while, and then got the idea.

Barley teething biscuits

These are great fun to gnaw on, but they get slimy after a while, so he has to put them down. Once down they glue themselves to whatever surface they are laid on, until a dog can come and jealously guard the treasure he found glued to the floor, book, toy, sweater, etc.

Blueberry

Another one of those sweet things. He'll eat them, but he's not a huge fan. When they are put on his tray he just stares at them.

Ricecake

He's not exactly sure what to do with these. But they sure are fun to hold.

Rice

Didn't really like the sticky rice the first time he tried it. Mostly it just stuck to his lip.

Dahl

Mommy shared some of her dahl (lentils) with Jaryth. Yumm. He wasn't sure at first, but quickly decided that it tasted good.

Avocado

Avocado at first got a negative reaction, but on second thought it tasted okay. Mommmy, Daddy, Erin, and Jaryth all went to a restaurant. The adults had sandwiches or pizza and Jaryth got a whole avocado, which he ate 1/4 of.

Summer Squash

Summer squash was a huge hit. He ate over half a jar in his first sitting with it. This was a food that generated a smile the first time it went in his mouth. Yummy! I think summer squash is now his favorite food, with sweet potato in second place.

Bananas

Bananas are fun because we cut them into tiny pieces and let him try to feed himself. The dogs were very pleased with this method as well, as 90% of the food goes on the floor or in his lap (even with the catcher bib).

The one problem with bananas is that they can get too sweet if you leave them out too long. Sweet food causes him to make a face and sometimes even gag.

Pear

Pear got the surprise face when I fed it to him, but after a second of thought he decided he liked it and ate 5 spoonfuls the first try.

Peas with Brown Rice

Another baby food jar. He likes this too. It seems a tiny bit sweeter than plain peas, and he doesn't like sweet things very much.

Applesauce

He will eat applesauce, but only a little. I think it's a bit too sour for him. Mommy tends to eat more when he's eating this.

Peas

We got a jar of organic baby food and tried peas. He likes them. Not as much as sweet potatos, but except when he's feeling sick, he eats them well.

Cheerios

Mom was eating Cheerios and Jaryth stuck his hand in the bowl. It came out covered in O's. He put one in his mouth and started sucking it. He's not really able to chew it, but he enjoyed sucking it.

Now we give him Cheerios on his tray to play with. He gets maybe 2 to his mouth, the rest are either smashed, thrown on the floor or dropped in his lap. Another popular food with the dogs.

Carrot

We tried two versions of carrots. The first we tried was boiled organic carrot shreds that were soft, but not soft enough to really puree. He didn't really like this. Then we got some organic baby food carrots that was pureed. He liked this, not as much as sweet potato, but he did like it.

Apple

Mom was eating an apple and Jaryth decided to help her. He sucked on it for a long time, and tried to gnaw it with his lower teeth.

Potato

About two weeks after we tried the sweet potato, he started eyeing mom's potato on her plate, so she tried giving him a little after it had cooled. He ate it but only like 1 bite.

Sweet potato

This was the first food he'd ever had, and he seemed to like it. Of course, he also liked smearing it all over himself and the chair. A day or two after we tried feeding him this, he stopped trying to eat and tried to push it out with his tongue making a gagging noise. We decided he wasn't ready to eat and gave him a few more weeks to get used to the idea.
